How does fibre broadband internet work?

Whether you are looking to switch from your existing broadband provider or you are looking to upgrade to one of our fibre broadband solutions, we have you covered. With our pre-configured broadband router, you’ll be online and surfing the web in no time.

Fibre broadband, also known as fibre-optic broadband or simply 'fibre', delivers ultra-fast internet connections with the lowest possible latency. It is recommended for all properties with access to either fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) or fibre-to-the-property (FTTP).

Fibre broadband provides ultrafast broadband internet using fibre optic cables with two variants available: the most common being fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) and fibre to the property (FTTP), offering the greatest speeds.

With a fibre broadband connection, you will have a wall socket inside your home to which your fibre broadband router will connect. Outside your property, a cable will connect you to a local exchange, much like traditional ADSL broadband. However, the connection between your property and the exchange will either be copper for FTTC or fibre optic for FTTP. Both use fibre optic cable from your local exchange to connect you to the UK’s internet infrastructure.

  • As part of your enquiry, we will check if your property has access to FTTC or FTTP. The check is performed using the address of your property.

  • Speeds are dependent on infrastructure at your location, and we will perform a line check before confirming which of our unlimited data fibre broadband packages are available at your property. The maximum possible speeds we can offer are up to 900Mbps down and 100Mbps up.

  • Our fibre broadband plans come with unlimited data, so there is no need to worry about keeping track of your usage. You can focus on enjoying the internet, making fibre broadband perfect for home schooling, working from home, streaming, and supporting multiple users.

  • Yes, you can. However, when choosing to keep your existing telephone number, we will transfer it to a digital phone licence. There will be a one-off fee to port your number over to us and a monthly licence fee. You may also require an analogue telephone adaptor.

It is worth noting that in 2025, BT will be ceasing all analogue telephone lines. While there are options to convert to a digital line, many customers are now reconsidering the necessity of a landline telephone, with mobile phones being preferred for calls.

  • Our fibre broadband internet contracts are for 12 months.
